The bear is dead. The hunt was long. Everyone is hurt.
Late autumn rain chills the Forest. The smell of wet spruce and moss lingers in the fading light. Torchlight flickers on bloodied faces and sodden furs as you stand around the carcass.
You cut the pelt and the meat and prepare for the first feast, far away from the rest of the tribe. Tendons, bones, bladder – everything will be kept, prepared, used.
But first, the bones need to be cleansed in the sacred bonefire, the remnant spirits pacified, bound, the bear’s strength bent to your will.
Bones crack like chattering teeth in the pyre of alder and yew. The teeth of this bear shall bite hard even after death. Its ribs shall withstand terrifying ax-strikes. Its skull shall be the mask that carries its wearer into the Otherside. This bear shall provide: food, furs, fury and force.
A dice lands on 1.
The smoke curls wrong. It goes inward instead of up. A spiral forms. Something has gone terribly wrong.
This is Northpyre. You survive in the cold northern wilds, but you live in a world full of spirits and meaning. Everything taken must be honored. Life is austere, dangerous, and full of awe. Death is swift. Every act echoes through the vast fabric that is all that is. Balance must be kept, not because some higher power says it is so, but because consequences are real here and now.
Rituals are not just flavor, but essential. Surviving is a negotiation. Thisside world, the material, comprehensible one, is ruled by spirits that live in the Otherside. Everything wants something – the trees and the waters, the beasts and the stone, all are alive.
In the scene above, the ritual of sacred bonefire was meant to empower the bear’s remnants, so that its bones could become spears and masks and tools. But something slipped through, and now you must face what was let loose.
About the Game
Northpyre is a classless, low-magic system built from the ground up to model spiritual survival in a harsh animist world. Characters begin as ordinary humans. Everything matters: tools, relationships, rituals, materials, the nature of who you are.
The Otherside is real, layered, full of beauty and terror. Spirits don’t care what you want, but they might listen – if you understand what they want. Combat is tactical and deadly. The system is modular: you can play it fast and light, or embrace the crunch.
I’m currently running playtests. The core rules are solid, but some subsystems are still being refined. Next steps include writing adventures, GM tools, and support material to help tables bring the world to life – I want to make the game as easy as possible to play and run.
I’m also working with a layout artist who deeply understands the tone and vision of Northpyre. We’ve developed a clear strategy for how the book should look and feel, and how to make it both beautiful and usable.
There’s also an atmospheric micro-version in the works that I plan to release soon, a little playable teaser. More on that later.
Publication plans to be announced.

Thank you for reading.
